Otters

I was fortunate to be able to watch a pair of otters feeding in the river this morning, I stood and watched them for over half an hour and it was a delight to watch. They were eating small fish and often "porpoising" as they moved around. I noticed that mallard ducks are a little wary of otters although a mute swan paid them no attention at all and vice versa. At one point one otter was only a few feet out from the bank as he dived for fish. A truly wonderful experience, it is only a few days since we last saw one out of the water in a local wood so let's hope we have many more sightings and I have promised myself to always carry a camera from now on!

Wood Pigeon

My garden is often full of wood pigeons dining on the fallen scraps from the bird table. I do think that they are beautiful birds and are highly under-rated. They have amazing colours and shades which you don't see until you look closely. Enjoy.

Fulmars are pretty demonstrative, but it's great to see them back again for the breeding season, along with Guillemots, Razorbills, Gannets etc. It's great to be living near the coast again!

Fulmars have tubular noses and are relatives of the albatrosses so although they look like gulls they aren't related to them at all.

Amazing lighting as clouds race across the sky and the sun shines through.

In honour of my late father who loved these little flowers I'd like to share this picture of snowdrops, one of the first bulbs to flower in the late winter. They are pure white and remind of us of the pleasures to come as the weather improves.  These are by the woodland path that I walk most days.

Does anything beat the magnificence of the peacock's feathers? They are astonishing.

Often when walking looking for birds and monkeys and stuff I will see an interesting composition in the vegetation.  Here is a simple banana leaf with water droplets.

As promised here are some pics from Malaysia where we spent the last two weeks. Highlights included the range of birds and insects including an amazing synchronised firefly display.

Death

A day for finding dead birds, first a young swan dead on the riverbank with a crow on its back plucking the feathers away, it made me feel quite sad, then a Yellowhammer beside the house which probably had crashed into a window. On a lighter note this weekend we have been doing a garden bird count for the RSPB, on Saturday a Sparrowhawk sat on the fence and on Sunday fifty one starlings were on the bird feeder all at once.

Salmon Kelt

Late winter floods bring with them exhausted salmon who have finished spawning and many of whom won't make it back to the sea. There were three of them lying dead on the riverbank today, food now for the various birds who need this to survive the winter. In recent days I have also seen weasel and stoat out hunting during the day, usually around rabbit burrows. Our swans are still here in large numbers, both whooper and mute varieties. Local gamekeepers report less geese than usual but I've seen several skeins flying west in the last few days.

I went for a trip to Perthshire today to see Red Kites that have been re-introduced to Scotland, beautiful birds, very graceful, we saw about 20,of them. The mark on the wing is a tag, many have been tagged in the nest to provide data for the programme.
