Well well well, I fixed up my Wildcam last night at the foxes den and lo and behold it took 547 images! The result is the learning that fox cubs are nocturnal and played and fought with each other all night long. Mother did feed them at 9pm then disappeared all night. There was a cottontail rabbit's tail there this morning so presumably she is catching rabbits, there are plenty around here. So I imagine then that the cubs sleep for most of the day although I have seen them active in the early afternoon as well.
Later I made a movie of the 547 photos and put it on Youtube, just click here for the link, enjoy!

Well well well, what a day for discoveries! Now I find a den of foxes with two adults and four cubs/kits! Excellent. With more practice I might get some good shots! There are more photos here in the Fauna Gallery.... |

I was filming baby owls in Boulder yesterday and that was great fun. But today even better I found that my local owl has a baby and it is wandering around outside the nest, and I got this lovely shot of mother and baby together. How cool is that!

Ach, those pesky beavers, just kidding! Look at the effects of a beaver family, how they cut down the larger trees to get at the top branches where the bark is sweeter I would imagine. They behave like African elephants! If they can't reach it they just chop it down! Overall their effect is believed to be beneficial to the riperian areas and they are amazing animals. |

Found a total of 5 owl today including 2 owlets. The owlets spent a lot of time moving their head around without moving their eyes, hard to describe but fun to watch. They have fledged but are still close to the nest and are fairly unsteady on their feet, hopefully they fly better! Enjoy.

This is a story of murder (in human terms) so if you are squeamish then stop reading! Two blackbirds were fighting for supremacy during this mating season, call it a territorial dispute if you want but it was deadly. The aggressor had his adversary in the water and held him down and pecked at him until he was dead. Then continued to peck at the dead body for many minutes afterwards. Quite chilling and sad. Something I had never seen before but part of nature. There are two more photos following.

In this image the aggressor is so intent on killing its competitor that it is even prepared to take the risk of continuing to peck at it underwater!

Barn owls are pretty unusual in northern Colorado so I was pleased to find this on her nest. They are beautiful birds, pity I couldn't get closer.
